A Mommy Day Away at The Green Spa

Ahh, Spa Day! It is every mother’s dream! Having a little time to renew and rejuvenate at a spa for the afternoon!  Yesterday, we took time out of our busy mommy schedules and treated ourselves to an unbelievable spa afternoon at The Green Spa in Williamsville.

The Green Spa is a wonderfully relaxing and wonderfully organic spa and wellness center right here in WNY.  The spa features a number of treatments from massages to pedicures, facials to makeup applications, as well as reiki and reflexology treatments.  The atmosphere is so serene and beautiful.  We could have spent the whole day there (if our husbands and kids would have let us).

We took advantage of the spa’s “90 Minutes to a New You” package.  For only $75, we got a glorious 30-minute facial, 30-minute massage, and pedicure. This is an unbelievable deal and a by the end of the 90 minutes, we were so relaxed and felt like a million bucks.  We actually started to talk about when we were going to book our next appointment and how we could make this a regular outing for ourselves!!

The Green Spa is a gem in WNY! It is located at 5526 Main Street, in the heart of the Village of Williamsville.  Be sure to check out all of the great treatments and services that they offer by checking out their website at www.greenspawny.com.  They are also on Facebook!  If you do take advantage of their services, tell them that WNY Kids sent you!!

The Erie Canal Harbor is offering many great (and free!) events this summer!  Visitors are encouraged to participate in a wide variety of exciting programs, special events, festivals and concerts at the beautiful Erie Canal Harbor site this summer. There is ample parking located in surface lots and ramps in and around HSBC Arena. The harbor can be accessed through entrances at the foot of Main Street and on Scott Street, or by way of the Buffalo & Erie County Naval and Military Park, located on the northwestern edge of the harbor site. WNY Young Writer's Studio - A WNY Gem!

Reading and writing are two essential skills that our children need to make it in this world.  For some, writing is a skill that is also a passion.  Their is now a GREAT organization that has formed right here in WNY to help foster a love for writing and to help those who may struggle to find their passion.

Founded by Angela Stockman in 2008,  The WNY Young Writers’ Studio is a community where teachers and young people come together to discover what good writing is, how to create it, and how to inspire others to do the same.  Participants of all ability and experience levels define and work together to achieve unique personal and professional goals

that enrich their writing and teaching lives.  Week-long summer sessions are held for students in various locations throughout Western New York. Those who attend are encouraged to continue to join throughout the school year at no additional charge. The tuition rate of $160 provides all young people and teachers a year-long affiliation with the program, which includes participation in five summer sessions, five bi-monthly school year sessions, and carefully moderated online support, which fellows can access daily. Participants may register at anytime during the year.

All teachers and young writers are invited to assume leadership roles within our organization as interns or program

facilitators. Educators who join us may earn up to 42 hours of professional development credit at the discretion of their school administrators for their participation in Studio at our Daemen College or Kenan Center locations.

This summer, sessions will be held at the Kenan Center in Lockport July 12-16th and at Daemen College in Amherst for two session (August 9-13th) and (August 16th-20th).

To learn more about this amazing group and all of their great events, join them for their Celebration of Writing on Saturday, June 5th.  Hosted by Pinnacle Charter School, this event will run from 9:30-noon.  You must register for this event and can do so by visiting the group's website at www.wnyyws.org.

JumpBunch

Recently, I signed my four- year old daughter up for an amazing class through our local community education program.  It is called JumpBunch, and I had heard so many great things about it and thought that it would be perfect for her. Many people who have met my daughter would not characterize her as “shy”.  However, in trying new activities, she has proven herself to not only be shy but also terrified of doing anything in front of others.  This class has really helped to bring her out of her shell and she cannot wait to go each week.  As a matter of fact, she asks daily, “Do we have JumpBunch today”?

JumpBunch is a national sports and fitness franchise which provides classes,

camps and birthday parties to children 15 months to 12 years of age.  The program is specifically designed to assist the development of children in physical fitness. The JumpBunch curriculum consists of over 70 different sport activities keeping it fresh and new each week. Through innovative techniques, the Coaches introduce and reinforce loco motor skills, large and fine motor skills, hand/ foot and eye coordination, stretching and the fundamentals of sports. One of the main objectives of the JumpBunch Coach is to build confidence and self esteem in a non-competitive atmosphere. JumpBunch Coaches instruct a class with constant praise, positive feedback and encouragement. A standard 30 to 45-minute JumpBunch class consists of two warm-up songs, a sport and fitness activity, a stretching activity, a creative movement song and a cool down song.

I love this program because it really does a fantastic job of introducing kids to many different sports.  Because of their ages, it really allows for them to try a little bit of everything and  not feel the pressure to get it right the first time.  The classes are also geared to specific age levels and because my daughter is young, I get to do it with her, which is something that I love.  The philosophy that they instill in the kids at the beginning of each class is great too.  All of the kids are encouraged never to say “I can’t” and rather “I will try again.”

If you have the opportunity to sign your child up for one of the classes or utilize the program for a camp or birthday party, I would highly recommend it.  For more information about the program, visit the website at www.jumpbunchlocations.com/buffalo /.

The Internet And Our Kids

The Internet And Our Kids

The Internet….thereare so many great things about it.Without it, we would not be able to bring you our WNY Kids site, blog, Facebook page, etc.  It has revolutionized our world and our lives.  With every positive that we can list, we can also list some negatives with it.

Being in the schools, I am hearing the buzz of kids talking about how they spent hours on Facebook and other social networking site.  I have overheard students talking about conversations that they had online that could have very well been constituted as “bullying”.  On the news we are hearing about teenagers that are committing suicide because of the threats and messages that they are receiving online and on their cell phones.  It is a really sad state of affairs.

In addition, we are starting to hear about incidents of“sexting”.  Sexting is when oneparty takes pictures of themselves in provocative position on their cell phonesand sends it on to another person.  Many times, this is between a young boyfriend and girlfriend.  Then, weeks later when that couple breaks up, one party or the other sends that photo on to other who send it onto others…and you can imagine how fast it spreads.  The issue with this goes far beyond embarrassment and humiliation.  What these kids do not understand is that if they are underage, this act is considered child pornography.  Those in possession of these types of pictures and those who attempt to share or forward them, canbe held liable as distributors of child pornography.  Some have even been given the status of sex offender forthese acts.

All good parents know that all children need to be supervised while on the Internet.  What you may not know is how responsible you as a parent are to what your child is putting on the Internet.  Did you know that children need to be 13 years of age to even have an account on Facebook?  Also, if they post something or create a page that is considered harassing to another individual, the parent is liable if the child is underage.   Also, if a child sends harassing texts or creates messages on a cell phone and posts them to the Internet, the parent that pays the cell phone bill is liable.

As with anything, we need to educate our children on theproper ways to use the Internet. Our kids need to learn Internet etiquette and know that what they are putting on the Internet has lasting effects.  In this day and age, many colleges and potential employers are searching sites like Facebook, MySpace, and Google to find out information on potential candidates.

So how can you monitor your child’s Internet use without completely restricting its use? Here are some tips:

1.Make sure that all computers are located in an area of the house where it is easily visible.  Prohibit use of computers in your child’s bedroom.  Monitor what sites your child is going on while they are on the computer.

2.Create a password to get onto the Internet thatonly you, the parent, know.  Thisway you have to sign your child on to use the Internet.

3.Talk to your child about the dangers of the Internet.  Discuss the dangers of talking to people that they do not know and the lasting effects of what is they put on the Internet.

4.Many computers come with parental controls.  Research them know what you can do to protect your child.

5.Limit your child’s time on the computer and on their cell phone.  Teach them how to communicate online, but also in person!!

Finding Mommy "Me" Time - The SImple Joys

So this month has been a doozy.  Having the last name MURPHY, you would think that March would bring the “luck of the Irish”. Instead we have had more than our fair share of Murphy’s Law!

We have had one of the worst stomach flu’s run through nearly all of us (and now a need for new carpeting in our upstairs hallway), a trip to the ER for my husband with a rather scary diagnosis of a serious heart condition, a pretty interesting “disagreement” with my boss, and finally a sump pump that decided to quit resulting in a flooded basement.  It has been a heck of a month and I have to say…April cannot come soon enough!

So last night, after attending my son’s parent teacher conference, I decided that I needed a little “me time” before returning home.  Where else does a mom go to have some great “me time”?.............TARGET!

As I walked through the aisles just browsing and thinking about how crazy things have been, I picked up a new toilet bowl brush (ours has had quite a workout lately) and a bag of milk chocolate eggs (thank goodness for Easter candy!).  I cashed out and drove home feeling like a million bucks!  20 minutes at Target, a brand new toilet brush, and bag of candy…who knew that it could be better than any therapist out there?!

So moms out there…am I crazy or do you find joy in the little things too?  Am I the only one that can find this kind of serenity?

Area Women Owned Businesses Work Together to Benefit the Pajama Program

WNYKids.com Baby’s Sweet Beginnings (Lancaster), Insty-Prints (Cheektowaga) and Monkey See, Monkey Do Children's Bookstore (Clarence) have joined forces to collect new books and pajamas for area children to benefit the Pajama Program.   The Pajama Program provides new pajamas and new books to children in need, many who are waiting and hoping to be adopted.  The thousands of children that  are served, live in orphanages, group homes and shelters and are often shuffled between temporary living facilities. Many of them have been abused or abandoned, and have never enjoyed the simple comfort of having a mother or father tuck them in at bedtime and read to them.  Since 2001, through the generous donations of people just like you, they have been able to provide more than350,000 pajamas and 140,000 books to children in need nationwide.    The Pajama Program has 70 chapters in the United States and several international chapters.  The Pajama Program Buffalo Chapter, under the direction of Ann Cardena since 2007, has distributed over 5000 pairs of pajamas and over 2000 books to children in need. Inspired to lend a hand after watching a news clip on television regarding the program, Ann decided to start the chapter in Buffalo when she learned that one was in need.  The Buffalo Chapter supports Compass House, Cornerstone Manor, Gerard Place,Harvest House, Haven House, Salvation Army and Community Action Organization(Head Start Program) of Erie County.

“We wanted to do something for our community,” says Kelly Murphy, an editor for WNYKids.com “and we couldn’t think of anything more basic for children than warm, snuggly pajamas.”  Stacey Knights Pellicano, also an editor for WNYKids.com said, “Having an internet only presence, we wanted to reach out to our business relationships for drop off locations, and they jumped right on board, as we knew they would.”

The team plans to collect the new pajamas and books through April 28th.  People can leave their donations at Baby’s Sweet Beginnings at 231 Aurora St., Lancaster | Insty-Prints at 3959 Union Road, Cheektowaga | Monkey See, Monkey Do, 9060 Main St. Clarence during their business hours.  The final donation will be presented to The Pajama Program Buffalo Chapter at their “Fondue For A Cause” Event at the Melting Pot, Walden Galleria Mall on April 29, 2010.  They hope to collect 50 pairs of pajamas for this area.  For other drop off locations in Western New York, visit www.WNYKids.com.
